TikTok’s drama, New magic from Disney, and Helpful tips to navigate medical marketing

🏈 “The Big Game” is quickly approaching between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, a rematch from 2023 where Rihanna took Millennials back to “the good ole days” and allowed Boomers to grab more chips and dip.

The day is as sweet for football fans as it is for marketers – according to Nielsen, last year’s big game drew 123.7 million viewers. That’s a lot of eyeballs. 👀

It’s also a day to see which brands made the decision to use the biggest TV event of the year to drive growth (hopefully). The average cost for a:30 spot in the big game last year was $7 million, and that’s expected to increase to $8 million in 2025. As Rihanna would say “I still got mo’ money.” 💰

Alright enough football talk, let’s dive into the latest.

Guess who’s back?…TikTok

TikTok sent the U.S. into a frenzy after it went dark on January 18th, but quickly returned the next day. Creators and marketers rejoiced but were left with a burning question of now what?

The platform was thrown a lifeline until April 5th giving everyone Q1 to figure things out, but the future is still left to be determined. If the ban goes through, eMarketer predicts TikTok users will jump to YouTube (Shorts) and Meta to consume similar content. We know what you’re thinking – more money to Meta, great.

Capture the magic with Disney

Disney recently introduced real-time biddable deals for live sports and entertainment. The initiative allows advertisers to bid for ad placements during live events, enabling real-time engagement with audiences during high-impact moments.

Think of a college basketball game going into OT during March Madness, or a well thought out speech during the Oscar’s. These moments are impactful, and now brands can align with them to connect with highly engaged audiences using unique messaging.

How to handle political disruption as a medical marketer

As the U.S. ushers in a new leader, policies may be changing. MM+M assembled a roundtable to discuss the potential impact. Here’s what they had to say about establishing clear communication as the new medical landscape unfolds:

  1. Reaffirm Prevention: Emphasize the importance of preventive healthcare measures to reduce disease incidence and healthcare costs.
  2. Incorporate Humor: Utilize appropriate humor in messaging to enhance engagement and relatability with diverse audiences.
  3. Be Transparent: Openly share information about products, research, and corporate practices to build trust and credibility.
  4. Collaborate: Form partnerships within the industry and with external stakeholders to drive innovation and address complex healthcare challenges.
  5. Embrace Change: Adapt to evolving market dynamics and patient needs by being flexible and forward-thinking in strategies.

That’s Cool!

Jhpiego, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University, developed “Lifesaving Windows: A Look Into Maternal Health”, a holiday window display in Manhattan. The installation aimed to raise awareness about maternal health issues by sharing an experience one mother had in Miswaki, Tanzania.
